Tung Chee-hwa’s office said in a statement early on Sept. 9 that the former vice chairman of the CPPCC and Hong Kong’s first chief executive died peacefully in hospital on the evening of Sept. 8, 2026, at about 10:00 p.m., surrounded by family. He was 89.
