Japan Meteorological Agency said a magnitude-5.6 earthquake struck offshore Iwate Prefecture at 02:58 JST on the 9th (01:58 Beijing). Epicenter was near 40.1N, 142.4E with a focal depth of about 40 km. The agency said there is no tsunami threat.
